Sex Education in Paxot II

Today, a group of us headed to Paxot II for sex education classes.  In our group, we had Lisa and Kemmel, Gaspar, Cesar, Martina, Cesibel and myself.

The boys and the girls are separated for the classes.  We do not want to cause embarrassment and it is expected that the parents attend the class with their children.  This way, when the children have questions, the parents will have a better understanding of the material.  We need to remember that the parents have little or no education on this.

There are three classes, divided by age.  This is Lisa, with the youngest girls and their moms.  Martina (on the right side of the table, wearing black) translated into K'iche'.

This is Kemmel, with the boys and their fathers.  Cesar, to the left of the pole, translated for Kemmel.

Of course, there was a lot of giggling at different parts of the class.  All of the material was age relevant.  The youngest classes only learned that boys and girls are different, that we we need to wear cloths to protect these parts and that only our parents or a doctor should remove our clothes.   Then the youngest class got to color a page of Adam and Eve.

Lisa caught me coloring with a little boy.

The material got more specific in the other two classes.  In the oldest class, it was the mothers that giggled more than the teenagers.  I thought this was interesting.  A few times, Lisa would pause as they regained their composure.

In the last class, the girls and mothers had an opportunity to write their questions if they were too embarrassed to ask.  We also read scriptures that pertained to the topic. Lisa finished a class with a prayer, asking God to be with everyone as they mature and that they will have a close relationship to Him.  We understand that maturing is not always easy.......difficult for the child and also the parents.
