On the way to Choacaman IV today, Juan told us about a chicken bus almost killing some children near the Lemoa Lake yesterday. Recently, part of the road has been repaved so the speed bumps or tumalos have not been replaced yet. Yesterday, out of anger and fear, the community cut a large tree in half an placed it in two different sections on the road, before and after the lake. The put up a freshly painted sign to warn the drivers. We will see what happens.
The chicken buses that are down here are driven from The States. They have quite a reputation for driving very fast and without any respect for other vehicles, people walking on the sides of the road or for any animals.
The buses are usually are over 10 years old with more than 150,000 on them. They are driven to Guatemala and restored, inside and out.
I have seen many bus accidents and have even seen them flip over on their side due to the speed they take on the curves. Some have gone through the railings and over the mountain side. The other day, I heard that one of the drivers had run over his ayudante or helper when he thought he had cleared the front of the bus.
As I have said before, always an adventure!
Today we had a good clinic in Chocaman with 10 patients. Five of those patients were diabetics.
Many of the patients were new and it is always good to see new patients.
Tomorrow we will be in Chuchipaca.
